Laboratory for Architectural History and Construction Theory

Research focuses on how East Asian architectural history has been shaped by construction engineering traditions and their theoretical discourse. Topics include tectonicsanti-tectonicsmorphology of structural remnants, and material culture.

The lab critiques Western tectonic theories that inadequately account for Taiwan’s seismic and typhoon-prone conditions and instead refines theoretical definitions grounded in East Asian experience. It studies the cultural meanings of building materials, revealing complex symbolic and technical layers relevant to heritage restoration and adaptive reuse.

Key research areas:

  1. Tectonic and anti-tectonic theory
  2. Morphology of structural remains
  3. Material culture
  4. Symbolism and social atmosphere of building materials
  5. Developmental history of structural materials
  6. Cultural contexts of materials in heritage conservation
  7. Revitalization and adaptive reuse planning of heritage architecture
