Architectural Space and Culture Laboratory (ASC)
The laboratory specializes in Taiwanese architectural history and heritage conservation. The principal investigator serves as an executive board member of the Taiwan Cultural Heritage Society and the Taiwan Society of Architectural History, while concurrently acting as a committee member of the Ministry of Culture’s Monument and Historic Architecture Committee, the Settlement and Cultural Landscape Committee, and the Interministerial Cultural Heritage Survey Team, as well as a cultural heritage review committee member for the Taipei City, Hsinchu City, Keelung City, and Kinmen County Governments.
Over a decade of research experience covers heritage documentation and preservation projects across northern and eastern Taiwan, integrating humanities, social sciences, architecture, environmental engineering, and other interdisciplinary fields. The lab combines specialists from architecture, history, art, archaeology, landscaping, systems, and structures to develop a deeper understanding of heritage sites, generating abundant applied research outcomes.
The ASC focuses on graduate-level research in architectural history and theory, while the Architectural Culture Studio (ACStudio), composed of undergraduate students, conducts hands-on architectural documentation and heritage surveying. Every winter and summer, 5–10 architecture students interested in historic preservation are recruited for intensive training in field surveying, non-destructive instrumentation, and documentation techniques. The goal is to establish a comprehensive learning platform that bridges theory and practice, fostering professional field competence aligned with industry–academia collaboration objectives.
Through continuous involvement in heritage conservation projects, the lab has established NTUT’s unique research framework and technical guidelines for heritage surveying, restoration planning, management, and maintenance. These methods now define the NTUT heritage research standard, ensuring academically rigorous, professionally recognized, and high-quality outputs in Taiwan’s preservation field.
