Architectural Design and Theory Laboratory
Based on architectural and landscape training received at the undergraduate level, master's research in urban space studies, and doctoral work in design theory and methodology, an integrated foundation in architecture—linking architecture, landscape, and urban design—has been developed to form the core of personal teaching and research interests. In both research and teaching, the focus is on how to approach architectural creation from multiple perspectives (such as art, philosophy, and contemporary thought), emphasizing essential explorations of architecture and fostering abilities in independent critical thinking, reasoning, and logic, while simultaneously cultivating bodily perception. Through rigorous discourse and the pursuit of design philosophy in architectural creation, the aim is for learners to become individuals with independent spirits who explore the original spatial creativity within themselves.
Research topics include advanced architectural design practice, design methodology, and the reconsideration of spatial and architectural issues with contemporary significance. Belief in architecture as a discipline is embedded in a range of courses, including undergraduate offerings such as “Architecture and Environmental Aesthetics,” “Seminar on Masterpieces,” “Topics in Landscape Architecture,” as well as graduate courses such as “Regional Landscape Design Methodology,” “Special Topics in Contemporary Architecture and Landscape,” and a two-semester sequence of “Architectural Seminar” and “Modernity and Architectural Masterpieces Seminar.” These collectively aim to cultivate an integrated environmental and individual consciousness in the study of architecture.
Research areas encompass regional theory, landscape architecture theory and practice, ecological studies, urban design, environmental art theory, and landscape design methodology. The research attends to cross-scalar relationships among architecture, landscape, and the urban realm, and, through a balance of theory and practice, explores contemporary environmental issues and architectural responses to landscape consciousness.
