Urban Image and Media Culture Laboratory
Since the late 2000s, as cities at all levels in Taiwan gradually aligned with global urban development processes, there has been a recent trend in urban cultural governance that explores possibilities beyond the previous reliance on political and economic development models. In this process, various forms of image media have been heavily involved; from top-down urban policy and image construction projects to bottom-up media documenting local history and culture, manifested through community building and tourism practices. Faced with these emerging phenomena in urban design and cultural governance, this laboratory aims to collect first-hand local data and transform it into concepts and theories that can be applied by government agencies, planning units, community organizations, and enterprises and individuals in the image and cultural creative industries. The laboratory further hopes to engage in dialogue with current global academic theoretical developments, allowing the Taiwan experience to gain a place on different geographical scales such as Chinese-speaking cities, the Asian region, and the global stage. Ultimately, the laboratory’s research results will also contribute to the emerging interdisciplinary field of "media and environmental studies," dedicated to shaping and expanding this new domain.
