Architectural Design and Theory
- Design Methodology
- Traditional Architecture
- Urban Social Infrastructure and Architecture
- Tectonic Theory and Heritage Reuse
- Environmental Psychology and Behavior
The "Design Theory Division" of the NTUT Graduate Institute of Architecture and Urban Design emphasizes both architectural theory and hands-on design practices. Under the guidance of four leading faculty members, the courses cover a broad range of topics including architectural typologies, spatial culture, global and Asian architectural history, cultural landscapes, spatial aesthetics, global landscapes, architectural criticism, heritage conservation, and human–environment interactions. The teaching objective is to cultivate students' skills in observation, analysis, induction, and creative thinking, enabling effective dialogue with users. This fosters enhanced humanistic care for the environment, guides students in developing theoretical frameworks for environmental analysis, and encourages the application of theory through practice.
Engineering Technology and Environmental Control
- Building Construction Methods
- Architectural Energy
- Environmental Control and Green Buildings
- Architectural and Urban Disaster Prevention
- Smart Healthy Buildings
- Low-Carbon Architecture
The "Engineering Technology and Environmental Control" division aims to develop green architecture, smart buildings, healthy buildings, resilient disaster prevention designs, innovative construction, and advanced building materials. By integrating ecological principles and high-tech systems, this division fosters the creation of human-centered, energy-efficient, and health-conscious living spaces.
As climate change and global warming accelerate, this division prioritizes sustainability and circularity in the built environment, combining theory and practice to nurture professional competencies in design, independent judgment, and research.
Key teaching and research focuses include:
- Green architecture, smart buildings, healthy buildings, indoor environmental quality, innovative green building materials, building reuse, environmental control systems, and circular economy-oriented design.
- Performance-based fire safety design, evacuation research, and analysis of crowd evacuation behaviors and trends.
- Architectural planning and design, interior design, digital architecture, smart IoT environmental controls, resilient design and adaptation, indoor air quality, health risk assessment, and green building material verification systems.
- Building renewal and sustainable design, construction techniques and materials, and durability performance assessment of buildings.
Architectural Space and Culture Laboratory (ASC)
The laboratory specializes in Taiwanese architectural history and heritage conservation. The principal investigator serves as an executive board member of the Taiwan Cultural Heritage Society and the Taiwan Society of Architectural History, while concurrently acting as a committee member of the Ministry of Culture’s Monument and Historic Architecture Committee, the Settlement and Cultural Landscape Committee, and the Interministerial Cultural Heritage Survey Team, as well as a cultural heritage review committee member for the Taipei City, Hsinchu City, Keelung City, and Kinmen County Governments.
Over a decade of research experience covers heritage documentation and preservation projects across northern and eastern Taiwan, integrating humanities, social sciences, architecture, environmental engineering, and other interdisciplinary fields. The lab combines specialists from architecture, history, art, archaeology, landscaping, systems, and structures to develop a deeper understanding of heritage sites, generating abundant applied research outcomes.
The ASC focuses on graduate-level research in architectural history and theory, while the Architectural Culture Studio (ACStudio), composed of undergraduate students, conducts hands-on architectural documentation and heritage surveying. Every winter and summer, 5–10 architecture students interested in historic preservation are recruited for intensive training in field surveying, non-destructive instrumentation, and documentation techniques. The goal is to establish a comprehensive learning platform that bridges theory and practice, fostering professional field competence aligned with industry–academia collaboration objectives.
Through continuous involvement in heritage conservation projects, the lab has established NTUT’s unique research framework and technical guidelines for heritage surveying, restoration planning, management, and maintenance. These methods now define the NTUT heritage research standard, ensuring academically rigorous, professionally recognized, and high-quality outputs in Taiwan’s preservation field.

Global Cities and Multi-Architecture Laboratory
Since the 1980s, forces of pre- and post-globalization have reshaped urban spaces and people’s spatial perceptions. The increasing acceleration of urban transformations urges scholars in geography, sociology, political economy, and architectural studies to reinterpret spatial, cultural, and behavioral phenomena.
The lab investigates how architecture and urbanism respond to globalized urban conditions, exploring design research methods and theoretical approaches that extend beyond modernist or postmodernist thought. It emphasizes networked urbanism, focusing on East Asian cities to propose new theories and design insights specific to rapidly evolving metropolitan environments.
Research themes include informality, urban social infrastructure, and alternative readings of spatial coexistence across scales. Projects analyze urban cases in East Asia to develop comparative frameworks with Euro-American urban systems, highlighting the region’s dynamic and fluid characteristics.
Current teaching includes graduate courses on urban social infrastructure in contemporary cities and architectural issues in urban contexts, treating architecture and urban research as interactive, integrative spatial assemblies.
 Focus areas:
- Globalized cities and informal urban landscapes
- Architecture and urban infrastructural networks
- Urban studies and critical theory

Laboratory for Architectural History and Construction Theory
Research focuses on how East Asian architectural history has been shaped by construction engineering traditions and their theoretical discourse. Topics include tectonics, anti-tectonics, morphology of structural remnants, and material culture.
The lab critiques Western tectonic theories that inadequately account for Taiwan’s seismic and typhoon-prone conditions and instead refines theoretical definitions grounded in East Asian experience. It studies the cultural meanings of building materials, revealing complex symbolic and technical layers relevant to heritage restoration and adaptive reuse.
Key research areas:
- Tectonic and anti-tectonic theory
- Morphology of structural remains
- Material culture
- Symbolism and social atmosphere of building materials
- Developmental history of structural materials
- Cultural contexts of materials in heritage conservation
- Revitalization and adaptive reuse planning of heritage architecture
